Secrets of Nality

We begin our review of the socionic trait "IRRATIONALITY-RATIONALITY". Let us recall that its rational pole corresponds to the Competence (Conscientiousness) factor in the BIG FIVE system.

We will start our review with a list of all the semantic clusters identified for this trait based on the statistics from V.L. Talanov's questionnaires.
The names of the clusters in the following list correspond to the irrational pole of each cluster. Accordingly, for the rational pole, everything would be reversed. For instance, the rational pole of Cluster №6 would be described as: "Increased tendency to plan all future activities in advance" Similarly, the rational pole of Cluster №8 would be described as: "Difficulty adapting on the fly, mentally inflexible" and so on.

PROFILE OF PURE IRRATIONALITY1-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-1

SOME REMARKS:

  1. POFIGISM (“ПОФИГИЗМ”) (cluster 33) is the most indicative of "pure" irrationality (see its profile).

  2. A trait such as "decisiveness" (the ability and habit to make decisions quickly, without getting stuck in doubts or lengthy contemplation) is not included among the clusters correlated with “Nality” – its correlation with Nality is very low. It might seem that this trait is related to impulsiveness (cluster 26), but there is, nevertheless, a significant fundamental difference between them. IMPULSIVENESS is primarily based on issues that describe erroneous impulsive reactions of a person due to an inability to weigh and control actions in advance. However, the ability to make decisions quickly depends not only on this but also on the objective speed of cognitive processes, as well as on the ability to quickly construct a hierarchy of the significance of different choices, which is closely related to the RATIONAL property of speed and the ability to prioritize (see cluster 29).

  3. All clusters, without exception, gravitate to the active and especially strengthened work of the anterior (frontal) neocortex – however, different regions of it. Accordingly, the irrational pole of all 45 clusters is associated, on the contrary, with a deficit of frontal neocortical activity, which can be caused by various factors. On a neurochemical level, there is significant involvement of dopaminergic and noradrenergic mechanisms in the trait of Nality.

  4. From the attached trait profiles (see tables 1-1, 1-2), it is evident that the trait of Nality is quite clearly divided into two subsets of clusters. In one half of the clusters, the irrational pole is closely linked with intuition-ethics, and in the other half – with sensory-logic. Obviously, each of these halves of the clusters corresponds to its own area in the neocortex, and the territories (and, probably, also the neurochemical mechanisms) of these two large cluster subsets are also different and do not overlap. Thus, Nality as a whole does not have a single, common genetic basis. There is one genetics for the half related to intuition-ethics, and, likely, a completely different genetics (perhaps even opposite, though leading to the same final sign of the pole of Nality) is found in the case of sensory-logic Nality. This explains why the trait of Nality is not part of the dual-complementary traits (i.e., those in which the two poles of the trait most likely have genetic opposites).

Next, we will examine the clusters in order. However, due to their large number, we will only present a few questions for each cluster, which most clearly characterize that cluster.

COMPOSITION OF CLUSTERS OF IRRATIONALITY IN QUESTION EXAMPLES

The questions provided are not exhaustive of those included in the cluster — only selected examples are shown for illustration purposes.

(The first number after each questionnaire item indicates the correlation of its type profile with the resulting type profile of the entire cluster; the second number indicates the correlation of the question with the profile of "pure" irrationality.)
