Characteristics of 24 Clusters of Socionic Extraversion-Introversion

EXTRAVERSION CLUSTERS (NAME OR BRIEF DESCRIPTION):

The first six clusters listed below are the standard extraversion clusters in the Big Five system (the questions from V. Talanov’s questionnaires were specifically selected for these clusters to ensure they align with the substantive content of these clusters in the original Big Five model). The subsequent clusters are formed from questions that do not fall into the first six but highly correlate with socionic extraversion and have a distinct, original meaning that remains consistent across all questions within the cluster.

  1. E1 - Friendliness
  2. E2 - Sociability
  3. E3 - Persistence, Initiative
  4. E4 - Activity, Quickness, Impatience, Tendency to Mistake Wishes for Reality
  5. E5 - Excitability, Thrill-Seeking
  6. E6 - Cheerfulness
  7. Overall Energy Potential
  8. Loudness of Voice
  9. Talkativeness (High Need for Speaking)
  10. Speech Speed
  11. Emotional Leadership
  12. Restlessness
  13. Expansive Movements, Active Gesturing, Impulsiveness, Weak Motor Inhibitory Control
  14. Entrepreneurial Machiavellianism in Behavior, Quick Thinking and Verbal Reaction, Witty and Sharp-Tongued
  15. Orientation Towards the External World and External Events
  16. Impatience and High Reactive Irritability
  17. Unceremoniousness, Fearlessness and Determination, Tolerance for Stressful Situations
  18. Passionateness and Impulsive Non-Reactive Temper, Quick-Temperedness, Instant Emotional Shifts
  19. No Difficulty in Formulating Smooth Speech Expressions
  20. Ability to Push Aside and Outmaneuver Rivals and Anyone Standing in the Way
  21. Cannot Stand Monotony or Long Engagement in One Task, Internally Dynamic, Likes to Wake People Up and "Stir Things Up" with Jokes, Brings Energy, Loves to Change and Transform Everything (Correlates with Restlessness)
  22. Showiness, Selfless Lying, Self-Adoration
  23. Enjoys Mimicking and Imitating Others by Copying Their Facial Expressions
  24. Stubbornness, Enjoys Participating in Arguments

The first clusters in the list correspond in meaning to the standard extraversion clusters in the Big Five system, followed by clusters arranged in descending order of their correlation with "pure" extraversion.

More detailed information about the clusters can be found in the attached Table 4 (including the number of questions in each cluster and the correlation of its type profile with the "pure" extraversion profile).

Tables 1, 2, and 3 present, respectively, the type, trait, and functional profiles of all clusters.

Table 5 is a matrix of intercorrelations between the type profiles of all clusters.

Clusters 1 and 2 (friendliness and sociability) differ very little from each other, showing the highest correlation (0.95) between their socionic type profiles. The same is true for the corresponding clusters in the Big Five system.

The clusters most closely associated with socionic extraversion, based on the correlation of their profiles with "pure" extraversion, belong to the "energy" group. First of all, a person’s overall energy potential (Cluster No. 7), followed by loudness of voice, talkativeness, speech speed, emotional leadership, restlessness, and expansive movements. All six "standard" extraversion clusters from the Big Five (Nos. 1-6 in our list) have a lower correlation with socionic extraversion than the seven clusters in the energy group (which, notably, are absent from the Big Five clusters). Additionally, the clusters in the "energy" group show the highest degree of intercorrelation among themselves (see Table 5).

Beyond the 24 clusters listed, we were unable to identify any other meaningful clusters among the 10,000 questionnaire items (such that a cluster would consist of more than two questions, and at the same time its resulting socionic profile would correlate well with pure verticity).

Important Note on Cluster 15

The foundation of Cluster 15 is statement #1 and its closest correlates. Contrary to Carl Jung’s assertion that orientation toward the external world should be the most defining characteristic of extraversion, this cluster is relatively weak, sparse, and less strongly correlated with extraversion compared to earlier clusters.

This observation suggests that the psychoanalytic notion of verticity (introversion vs. extraversion) as a simple direction of thoughts and aspirations either outward or inward is more theoretical than factual. In reality, the core of extraversion lies in the energetic component of the psyche.

Orientation toward the external world, as this cluster shows, is associated not only with extraversion but also with intelligence. Internal correlations of this cluster reveal that questions related to intelligence inevitably fall within its scope. The world of an intelligent person is broad, while the world of an unintelligent one (regardless of verticity) is narrow and focused solely on themselves.
