Socionic Profiles of the Human Pack Instinct and “Unity”
As we will see, the leading (and with a significant advantage over others) psychotype for all of these 13 subfactors is the LSI. Furthermore, for all 13 listed subfactors, the dominant role is played by the opposition between Di and Qi, with Fe and Te also playing a part. The differences in the profiles of these scales will only be in the degree of participation of the additional opposition between Ti and Fi, as well as Se and Ne, Ni and Si, Qe and De.
Scale 1: Level of pack instinct {#scale-1:-level-of-pack-instinct}

- People should behave independently, not uniformly, and should not look to leaders for guidance. -0.78
- I disapprove of people who always form groups, packs, and crowds, thus demonstrating their animal herd mentality. -0.65
Pack Instinct
As we can see from the table, the pack instinct in its pure form, without additional black-sensory "abuses", is almost entirely defined by the dominance of the functions Di and Fe over Qi and Te. Accordingly, the pack instinct is influenced by the dichotomy poles of aristocracy, declatimity, ascending, and ethics. Rationality also contributes somewhat.
The opposition between Fe-Te is secondary compared to the opposition between Di-Qi, but Fe also contributes to the pack instinct, and Te works against it. Unlike Fi, which works for the personal benefit of the individual (warning them about the mood and intentions of other members of the pack), the role of Fe is almost exclusively altruistic-social. Fe signals to other individuals both about dangers (both its approach and its removal) and about pleasant discoveries (useful to other members of the pack). In addition, the Fe of cubs also signals their needs. Outside the collective, Fe, with its demonstrative manifestations, is almost meaningless, and can even be dangerous for the subject.
Unlike Fe, Te is individualistic. It also works for survival when facing danger, but, like Fi, in the interests of the individual subject only. Te always sharply activates in moments of noradrenaline surges caused by danger or excitement (the so-called fight-or-flight states, requiring the central nervous system to make quick situational decisions, choosing between two or, at most, three behavioral alternatives, ignoring all secondary factors and directing released energy to the muscles). In such situations, the individual does not look to the collective or the behavior of the crowd, does not behave "like everyone else" or "by command", but makes decisions entirely independently.
Scale 2: Values of intragroup hierarchy {#scale-2:-values-of-intragroup-hierarchy}
- I respect authority and leaders. 0.93
- It is very important to respect authority and leaders. 0.88
- The world is divided into plebeians and aristocrats, and rightly so. 0.78
- I prefer a clear social hierarchy where everyone must know their place. 0.85
- I believe that the mandatory assignment of ranks to all public servants in an increasing order, depending on their years of service and individual merits, is a good and necessary thing. 0.87
- If you do not belong to a group of people bound by personal loyalty to their leader, you will achieve nothing in life. 0.94
- Everyone in society should know their place. 0.82
- A subordinate should not know the purpose behind a given order. 0.72
- In society, everyone should only know what is required of them according to their status, and no more. 0.75
- The rule "You are the boss - I am the fool, I am the boss - you are the fool" is perfectly fitting in life, it suits me and should be followed. 0.82
- In my opinion and taste, there is too much equality in modern society. 0.80
- It is not a sin to bow low to the strong and powerful. 0.90
- I like it when there are instructions from above on what to do. 0.73
- I always try to be attentive to the hierarchy existing in a collective and respect it. 0.82
- I feel comfortable if I am a member of a "pack" where there is a strong authoritative leader. 0.87
- I believe that a person cannot live normally and happily if they do not realize and feel themselves as part of and a tool for some higher will. 0.74
- The older person has more rights, and this is normal. 0.73
- I respect the hierarchy of rights and seniority in any society. 0.72
- Any hierarchy and the obligatory respect for people "according to their status" – position, age, etc., irritates me. In my opinion, this is more bad than good in any case. -0.95
- I find all the pietism, regalia, positions, ranks, hierarchies, etc., funny and boring, along with the traditions and rituals associated with them. -0.86
- Equal “horizontal” relationships are always more pleasant and preferable than hierarchical relationships between people. -0.82
- Fitting into some group hierarchy and becoming an inseparable part of it is more unpleasant than pleasant for me. -0.93
- Any respect for rank disgusts me. -0.87
- Being free and independent is a hundred times more important than being high-ranking. -0.76
- The existing hierarchy in society is more often irritatingly harmful than necessary and useful. -0.69
Compared to the previous cluster, this second "Unity" cluster maintains the dominant opposition between Di and Qi and the secondary opposition between Fe and Te but adds several additional oppositions between other function pairs.
Qe strengthens personal and interpersonal, group and intergroup boundaries, while De constantly violates them. Therefore, when it comes to hierarchy, for which the concept of boundaries is fundamental to the property, Qe strengthens it, whereas De weakens it.
Hierarchy also requires the fixation of structures – this is where the influence of Ti comes from.
Finally, the class-based structure of hierarchy creates inequality between social groups. Where there is inequality and the oppression that inevitably accompanies it, there is also centrality with the predominance of Se and Ni over Ne and Si, which we also observe.
As a result, Beta collects all the "pluses" for this property, where LSI leads brightly with even more contrast, and the 12 types of the other quadrants are left with crumbs.
Scale 3: Family and tribal values {#scale-3:-family-and-tribal-values}
- If a person is not completely devoted in their soul to their birthplace, their "small homeland", then one can hardly expect much good from them. 0.95
- I am for a strong traditional family with respect for seniority and division of rights and responsibilities. 0.95
- I am very sympathetic to the customs of those peoples where the interests of the clan and the opinion of the elders are law for everyone. 0.88
- I almost always perceive myself not as an individual, but as part of a family, a tribe. 0.85
- A person must obey the decisions of parents and senior family members. 0.84
- The family must take responsibility for each of its members. 0.83
- A person without their pack, without concern for their tribe and nationality, is always a dangerous degenerate. 0.80
- What is more important to instill in children?
- Independence and self-sufficiency
- A sense of family and clan cohesion. 0.80
- All members of a nation should to some extent share the guilt for the sins committed in the past by other members of the same nation. 0.77
- Developed clan-based structures are more beneficial than harmful to society. 0.76
- I find it much easier to take information from a person if I know their affiliation with a group: national, professional, etc. 0.72
- It is natural that, in the eyes of the wronged, the children of their offenders should somehow answer for their parents' sins. 0.61
- I don't believe in "life-long marriage"; getting married or having a spouse is only necessary as long as it serves the purpose of raising children. -0.83
- All relatives, except for one's father and mother, should be treated solely based on their personal qualities—that is, regardless of their degree of kinship. -0.80
Compared to the first subcluster, here, in the case of family and tribal values, the confrontations in the pairs Di-Qi and Fe-Te is supplemented by the confrontation of Qe against De (Qe emphasizes the importance of intergroup boundaries) and, to a lesser extent, Si against Ni (the importance of mutual care).
Scale 4: Statism values – the state above all {#scale-4:-statism-values-–-the-state-above-all}
- If a person lacks feelings of loyal allegiance, they also lack noble character. 0.92
- A person is not a patriot if they allow, or even worse, help criticize their country to foreigners. 0.92
- A citizen must belong to the state as a child belongs to a family. 0.91
- Athletes at the Olympics should represent not themselves, but primarily their country. 0.89
- In public life, fostering a commitment to a unified ideology among the population is necessary. 0.89
- I dislike cosmopolitans; a worthy person is always a patriot. 0.88
- The world of any individual person is just a part of the collective fate of the state, and nothing more. 0.88
- Showing sympathy for a country competing with your homeland or a company competing with your employer is already betrayal. 0.87
- Ideally, citizens should be subordinate elements of their state, "cogs" in a large, well-functioning machine. 0.87
- People who criticize their country are traitors. 0.86
- During the Russian Civil War of 1917–1921, I would have sided with those who served the idea of a united, indivisible Russia. 0.85
- Propaganda should instill readiness for heroism in people. 0.85
- People who disagree with the government's policies have no right to live in the country. 0.84
- If a scientific discovery is important, it should remain solely within the home country. 0.83
- Economic growth should not come at the expense of the greatness of the state. 0.83
- I enjoy patriotic films. 0.83
- The most essential value for any society is the unity and cohesion of the people. 0.83
- I support increased government control over internet publications. 0.79
- My country is always right by definition. 0.79
- Right or wrong, my country is my country, and therefore it is always right. 0.77
- The Chinese system, in which people's rights depend on their "social credit" earned through their behavior, is more good and useful than not. 0.76
- Being a patriot means defending your country from any accusations. 0.75
- Fiercely defending the residents of a hostile country means betraying your own country. 0.74
- I believe all television channels should belong to or be tightly controlled by the state. 0.71
- Pre-censorship of newspapers and magazines in some form must exist. 0.71
- I like standing during the national anthem. 0.70
- If a scientist makes a discovery, it:
- Belongs only to them.
- Partly belongs to the entire nation, so the scientist has no right to share it "outside." 0.67
- My country is always right by definition because it is my country. 0.66
- The priority in society should lie not with the state's interests but with the people's interests. -0.92
- Patriotism is often cultivated to mask the oppression of the people. -0.88
- I am more in favor of reducing the state's functions and powers over citizens than increasing them. -0.87
- The state, ideally, is merely a temporary social contract between citizens and nothing more. -0.87
- I would prefer to work:
- As a civil servant
- In a private company. -0.87
- Shared interests are always much more important than citizenship or nationality. -0.85
- The fewer customs borders in the world, the better—goods should move freely without restrictions. -0.83
- People's rights to life and freedom are more important than any state or national interests. -0.75
- Many state functions in many countries today are clearly excessive. -0.74
- Which slogan resonates with you more? Indicate the number:
- A united people, a shared destiny
- We are different, but we are friendly. -0.71
In addition to the confrontations between the Di-Qi and Fe-Te, which are common to all subfactors of the herd instinct ("unity"), there are also confrontations between Qe and De (the importance of interstate borders, elements of isolationism) and between Se and Ne (state violence against the individual against the background of the forced uniformity of all citizens as "cogs" in the state machine).
Scale 5: Traditional values {#scale-5:-traditional-values}
- Customs and traditions must be preserved and supported. 0.93
- My friends and family would say that I adhere to traditional values. 0.91
- I believe that for relationships between people in society, various collective rituals and conventions are very useful and therefore necessary. 0.81
- The masses of people do not need the development of rights or self-awareness; instead, strengthening faith and traditions is more necessary and important for them. 0.80
- In critical situations, one should rely on:
- Deviation from the rules
- Stricter adherence to the rules
0.74
- I want people to strictly follow religious rules and traditions. 0.69
- Norms penalizing non-traditional sexual orientations should be reinstated in the law. 0.58
- I love deviations from the norm and usually welcome them. -0.85
- I prefer shaking up the established order rather than justifying and defending it. -0.81
- I am an advocate of living with minimal formalities and rituals. -0.77
To the general oppositions present in all subfactors of the herd instinct ("unity") between Di-Qi and Fe-Te, a rather positive role of Ti is added here (since traditional values are normative, and it is precisely in this normative advocacy that Ti works). Additionally, there is a sharply negative influence of Ne on traditional values (specifically a negative influence of Ne, not a positive influence of Se - Ne craves innovation, wants to experiment, and traditional values are a barrier to this).
Scale 6: Values of prohibitive conservatism and anti-liberalism
{#scale-6:-values-of-prohibitive-conservatism-and-anti-liberalism}
- A country will not be strong and respected in the world if it allows room for dissent. 0.96
- The closer the structure of civil society is to that of the military, the healthier, stronger, and more robust the society will be. 0.95
- Censorship is justified when the work of the press starts interfering with the interests of state power. 0.95
- I am in favor of a government that operates with a "strong hand". 0.94
- The tougher and stricter the regime, the better it is. 0.92
- Usually, more harm comes from those who undermine the authority of leadership than from those who hide the truth in the name of public peace. 0.92
- I believe lawmakers often cater to liberals and give people too much freedom. 0.89
- To the word "liberalism", I always feel like adding the word "rotten". 0.73
- I am more of a liberal-minded person than a conservative one. -0.95
- If I were President, I would expand transparency and reduce the lists and duration of information classified as state secrets. -0.95
- I believe that people can govern themselves and live happily without kings, leaders, or masters. -0.94
- Conservatives who emphasize "unity" are often worse than anarchists. -0.78
- I am against the policy of legislative prohibitions and restrictions—there should be as few prohibitions in the law as possible, and definitely far fewer than today. -0.76
In addition to the confrontations between Di-Qi and Fe-Te, there are also confrontations between Qe and De (the importance of interstate borders, elements of isolationism), Ti and Fi (the regulation of people's behavior by prohibition is important, while their feelings and reactions are not) and between Se and Ne (anti-liberalism is closely related to statism and, like it, is built on violence and persecution of anyone who refuses to conform to the Procrustean bed of prescribed semi-military and semi-servile living).
Scale 7: Values of grand imperial militarism
{#scale-7:-values-of-grand-imperial-militarism}
- The greatest feats are military ones. 0.95
- To be afraid of war or to constantly appeal to friendship with other powers is already a path to defeatism and betrayal. 0.92
- Soldiers are more necessary to the people than scientists. 0.86
- I enjoy watching military parades. 0.86
- I would enjoy military service. 0.83
- In a healthy society, the police should have higher funding priorities than fundamental science, especially research that is not directly relevant to current needs. 0.79
- For most countries, a woman is better suited to be the leader than a man. -0.91
- A high standard of living is more important than being a great military power. -0.89
In addition to the confrontations between Di-Qi and Fe-Te, there are also confrontations between Qe and De (the importance of interstate borders, elements of isolationism), Ti and Fi (the normalization of people's behavior by military hierarchy is important, while their feelings and reactions are not, moreover, other people's feelings are not important within the framework of the ideology of violence) and between Se and Ne (since militarism is fundamentally based on violence).
Scale 8: Values of nationalism and chauvinism
{#scale-8:-values-of-nationalism-and-chauvinism}
- National values are more important and higher than so-called "universal human" ones. 0.90
- I am against interracial marriages, even if the people involved are of the same high cultural level. 0.90
- Representatives of different nations differ significantly from each other genetically, including psychological differences and innate ways of thinking. 0.85
- The immediate interests of my nation are much more important to me than the vague interests of humanity as a whole. 0.84
- The most dangerous people for the state are those who pollute the national soil with the weeds of cosmopolitanism. 0.83
- The interests of one’s own nation must always be above the interests of all other nations. 0.83
- The rights of immigrants should be significantly restricted compared to the rights of native citizens. 0.80
- If people marry members of racially distant ethnic groups, the national identity of the people suffers and dies. 0.80
- There are nations that are dangerous to my nation and wish it harm. 0.79
- Different nations differ from each other more than people of the same nationality differ among themselves. 0.77
- Without national identity, that is, without a sense of national distinctiveness, a nation and its state are doomed to perish. 0.73
- There can be no profound moral feeling in a person if they lack pride in their nationality. 0.69
- Outside of their native nation, any individual is nothing. 0.64
- I am completely indifferent to where a person is from, their nationality, or group affiliation—I am interested only in their personal qualities. -0.89
- Shared language is more important than skin color or shared national origin. -0.88
In addition to the confrontations between Di-Qi and Fe-Te, there are also confrontations between Qe and De (the importance of interstate borders, elements of isolationism), Ti and Fi (norming human behavior is essential to nationalism, while the individual approach to people dictated by Fi is unnecessary and considered harmful) and between Se and Ne (Se is crucial since chauvinism relies on hatred and violence, while Ne is unnecessary and harmful because chauvinism is built on a totalitarian ideology for which any pluralism of opinions is dangerous).
Scale 9: Values of social punishments and sanctions
{#scale-9:-values-of-social-punishments-and-sanctions}
- Punishments have often been more effective for me than praise. 0.89
- There were times when penalties imposed on me helped correct my behavior. 0.79
- Carrots and sticks are generally much better motivators for achievement than rods and whips. -0.81
- Fear of punishment should be used as a stimulus as rarely as possible, and ideally not used at all. -0.90
To the general oppositions present in all subfactors of the herd instinct, that is, "unity" (namely, oppositions between Di-Qi and Fe-Te), several additional oppositions are introduced here: between Ti and Fi (norming human behavior through a belief in the virtue of punishments is essential, while the individual approach to people and understanding of their motives dictated by Fi is unnecessary and even considered harmful), between Se and Ne (Se is vital since punishments are built on violence, while Ne is unnecessary and harmful because it allows for a plurality of behavioral patterns not accounted for in the punishment codes).
What is new compared to previously considered subclusters is also the pronounced opposition between Ni and Si, where Ni works on the belief in the virtue of punishment. And how could it be without Ni? No way, because—victimization.
It is worth recalling that victimization, with its masochistic tendencies, is likely based (according to many indirect findings) on an increased release of endorphins (the body's natural opioids) in response to pain among white intuitives (ego Ni). That is why it seems entirely natural to many white intuitives (but not to Si-valuing types) to follow the logical chain: PUNISHMENT, PAIN → ENLIGHTENMENT, PURIFICATION.
Those most inclined to expand and toughen the system of punishments are LSIs with additionally strengthened decisive functions (Se and Ni) and additionally weakened Te and peripheral functions (Ne and Si).
Scale 10: Values of hierarchical-autocratic social structure
{#scale-10:-values-of-hierarchical-autocratic-social-structure}
- An ideal monarchy is better than an ideal republic. 0.93
- Society needs strict and even fierce leaders. 0.92
- I like the rule of a firm hand, even if some people scream about various violations. 0.92
- Free-thinking is unacceptable in a family; there must necessarily be one main authority whose word is final. 0.90
- Autocratic rule is better than any democracy. 0.87
- I believe that there was more good than bad in Russian serfdom (before 1861). 0.86
- I prefer leaders with an authoritative and strongly-willed manner of behavior. 0.86
- A person destined by birth to be a servant of their superiors must accept their fate. 0.86
- I admire people like Stalin, Napoleon, Ivan the Terrible, and Genghis Khan. 0.84
- It is better to live in:
- A unitary state
- A federation with fairly broad autonomous rights for regions -0.83
- Power must always be divided among several independent branches—it is unacceptable to concentrate it in one set of hands. -0.81
To the general oppositions for all subfactors of the pack instinct (namely, the oppositions between Qi-Di and between Fe-Te), are added the oppositions between Qe and De (Qe supports social barriers, while De favors overcoming them); Ti and Fi (Ti serves autocracy in terms of caste-based human division, while the individual approach dictated by Fi, focusing on personal merits, is unnecessary for a class-based society); and also between Se and Ne (Se is important because autocracy is always built on violence, while Ne is unnecessary and harmful because it encourages free-thinking that undermines foundations and bonds). Ni also promotes violence, while Si does not, so their opposition is also present in this property.
Scale 11: Need for a leader, valuing unquestioning obedience
{#scale-11:-need-for-a-leader,-valuing-unquestioning-obedience}
- In my behavior, I always straightforwardly follow the leader, the chief (how they act, I will act too—within my place in the overall structure). 0.91
- What is more valuable?
- The right to choose
- Freedom from doubt
0.90
- Freedom from doubt
- The right to choose
- Compared to existing norms, most children should be raised with:
- More independence
- More obedience
- Everything is fine as it is
0.85
- More independence
- Life feels uncomfortable if there are no orders or guiding instructions from above. 0.83
- The rule "You're the boss—I'm the fool; I'm the boss—you’re the fool" is perfectly practical, suits me, and should be observed. 0.82
- I value strong, demanding, and authoritarian people who can guide and manage me. 0.81
- I like it when there are directives from above on what to do. 0.79
- I believe a person cannot live normally or happily unless they feel themselves to be an extension of and instrument for some higher will above them. 0.76
- It is divinely ordained that some are born to make decisions, and others to carry out their orders. 0.72
- I believe it is completely unreasonable for someone to go against the direction of their herd. 0.66
- A subordinate should not know the purpose of the orders given to them. 0.64
- I could never categorically be a silent, unquestioning follower in someone’s army. -0.90
- People should act independently, not uniformly, and shouldn’t orient themselves toward leaders. -0.85
- In any work, it is extremely important for me to choose my own path and goals. -0.83
- I would never agree to work in a system where orders—sometimes idiotic ones—must be unquestionably followed. -0.81
- I strongly dislike and cannot stand submitting to a collective if I have a differing opinion. -0.79
- What would you like to give people?
- Freedom from doubt
- Freedom of choice
-0.65
To the general oppositions present in all subfactors of the herd instinct (namely, oppositions between Di-Qi and Fe-Te), only the opposition between Ni and Ne is added here (Ni is dualized to commands from Se, whereas Ne does not tolerate obedience without understanding the purpose of actions).
The positive influence of rationality on this property almost disappears. Instead, positive influence arises from introversion and centrality. The increased influence of introversion, with some shift of the property toward irrationality (or more precisely, into the ambivert zone), suggests that questions of rational normative behavior are indifferent to this subfactor, and there is a shift towards passivity of behavior (introversion).
Overall, passive adherence to a recognized leader corresponds to strong Di, Fe, and Ni, and is hindered by Qi, Te, and Ne. The strongest opposition, as in all previously considered subfactors of the pack instinct, is observed on the Di-Qi axis.
Those most inclined to unquestioning, uninitiated obedience and a need for orders and directives from above (while demanding the same from others) are LSIs with sharply vulnerable Ne, additionally weakened Te, and enhanced Ni. The need for God, also often characteristic of LSIs, who by chance have risen to the top of the leadership (where they have no one else to receive orders from) comes from this same property - that is, from the vital need for a commander, a leader, who frees them from the torment of independent choice and responsibility. The well-known "stubbornness" of LSIs is also partly related to this property (i.e., the life need for a leader’s orders, allowing them to avoid reflecting on alternatives). It is often easier for an LSI to ignore emerging problems and push through a single past course of action than to dive into a sea of doubts in conditions of independent multiple choice.
Beyond the Beta quadra, this quality is expressed most prominently in declatim ethical introverts, such as SEI and EII.
Scale 12: Values of isolationism
{#scale-12:-values-of-isolationism}
- Who is more dangerous? 1) Supporters of sovereignty in everything 5) Supporters of broad global globalization 3) I don’t care 0.84
- It would be great to close the borders and live entirely without immigrants. 0.80
- Strangers of a different clan or tribe always make me tense; at first, I am always cautious with them because I expect some kind of trickery or deceit. 0.87
- The fewer customs borders in the world, the better—goods should move freely, without restrictions. -0.84
- I believe schoolchildren should correspond with their peers abroad—it’s beneficial. -0.79
To the confrontations between Di-Qi and Fe-Te (common to all subfactors of the herd instinct), here is added the stimulating role of Ti in the manifestation of the property, and the inhibiting role of Ne and De.
Ne prevents isolationism for the same reasons for which it zealously prevents censorship - it needs innovation, freedom of choice, pluralism, and unrestricted, including cross-border, exchange of information and experience.
De opposes isolationism as it is adept at overcoming cultural boundaries and naturally does not want to limit this strong aspect of itself.
LSIs with a sharply painful Ne and additionally weakened De and Te are most prone to isolationism.
Scale 13: Conservative retrograde, preference for images of the past over images of the future, resistance to change and innovation
{#scale-13:-conservative-retrograde,-preference-for-images-of-the-past-over-images-of-the-future,-resistance-to-change-and-innovation}
- I automatically resist any changes. 0.91
- It’s true that I don’t like breaking established orders. 0.91
- "Progress for the sake of progress" is harmful and unnecessary. 0.89
- I usually fear the unknown—sticking to the familiar world with everyone else seems more reliable to me. 0.89
- I dislike trying something new without a direct need for it. 0.88
- I don’t like changes in life; I’m a strong traditionalist. 0.87
- I believe no reforms should break what society has long been accustomed to and committed to—even if reformers have the strength and resources to overcome it. 0.86
- It’s usually easier for me than for others to accept some existing orders, even if I consider them wrong. 0.84
- I never challenge established things. 0.84
- I would prefer to live in a well-structured caste society, where profession and social roles are inherited. 0.83
- I take ideals of the past as a model, not utopian ideals of the future. 0.80
- The unknown is almost always dangerous and unpleasant. 0.78
- There are memorable items connected with certain people that I carefully and secretly keep exclusively for myself, with an almost "fetishistic" attitude toward them. 0.70
- In relation to new, unconventional theories and solutions, it’s hard to call me a conservative. -0.88
- I’m always trying something new. -0.86
- I quickly get bored with the same environment. -0.72
- I would rather live 200 years in the future than 200 years in the past. -0.72
- I support tearing down and breaking everything outdated. -0.68
This is the last of the considered subfactors of "unity".
The connection with the herd instinct is still preserved here, but it is already weaker than in the previously considered subfactors.
